PHOENIX (November 3, 2025) – Sagewood Institute of Lifelong Learning (SILL), a program for older adults to continue education through a curated speaker series, announced their upcoming season of lectures.
The fall lecture series covers dermatology and health, dogs and their wild ancestors, meteorites, robotics, local government and H.H. Nininger. Each 90-minute lecture will be hosted at the Oasis, a state-of-the-art onsite auditorium at Sagewood, a life-plan community in North Phoenix.
Speakers are selected by the residents of Sagewood through a new online nomination portal. The 12-person SILL board reviews the suggested speakers and topics and reaches out to the selected speakers for upcoming sessions.
“We launched a website this year and created a standardized form so all Sagewood residents can easily nominate who they want to hear during SILL lectures,” said Peter Buseck, current SILL President. “We try to choose speakers across a wide range of disciplines and topics. In Phoenix, there are abundant intellectually rich resources we can tap into to find experts covering resident interests.”
All speakers are experts in their fields and brought into the community to inform the residents of Sagewood.
While lifelong education is not a new concept, Sagewood was one of the first Arizona communities to bring continuing education directly to their campus so residents, including those with limited mobility, could participate. Residents founded the Sagewood Institute of Lifelong Learning in 2013, and a group of dedicated residents have been managing it ever since.
SILL is one of the most popular activities in the Sagewood community, with 80-140 residents attending each lecture. It is a perfect way for residents to socialize with one another, exchange ideas, meet neighbors with shared interests and, most importantly, expand their minds.
Lifelong learning has been proven to improve neuroplasticity, boost self-esteem, delay cognitive decline, and help older adults live a longer, fuller life.
“SILL is open to all residents, and we hope they learn something new and want to know even more about the topic,” adds Buseck. “It is a great way to keep everyone involved intellectually and connected through shared educational experiences. We have received much positive feedback from SILL attendees and are looking forward to another successful series of lectures this fall and spring.”
