When You're Looking

Looking for a senior living community is usually a once-in-a-lifetime experience. So it’s not surprising that a few hints for selecting such a community might be helpful. Here are a few steps to keep in mind as you look:

  1. Set an appointment. To enable us to devote our full attention to your plans, please give us a call in advance to set up a meeting with one of our highly professional Residency Counselors. For your first visit, you should plan to spend about 90 minutes to two hours, depending on the number of questions you have.

  2. Prepare for your appointment. Before you come in for a meeting, jot down what you consider to be some of the most important aspects of an ideal senior living community. They might include access to health care, great dining opportunities, home maintenance and housekeeping, or others. Also, during your meeting, please be prepared to discuss your particular reasons for seeking a senior living community, as well as your financial situation, including your total assets and monthly income. Your Residency Counselor will discuss the pricing of available residences and will help you find a residence that’s best suited to your financial profile.

  3. Have your questions ready. You’ll probably want to know about the timing for the community’s availability, so that you can plan to complete the sale of your house or houses and prepare for an orderly move. Your Residency Counselor will review the Resident First™ Relocation Services that are available to assist you with your move. You also will want your Residency Counselor to review the fees involved, when they are due and whether or not they’re refundable. Of course, other questions will arise that relate to the nature of the services included and the floor plans that you might find attractive, as well as their location in the community.

  4. Educate yourself. If this is your first visit to a senior living community, you might want to visit others in the area to do a bit of comparison shopping. It’s also a good idea to attend one of Sagewood's workshops on senior living options that are regularly scheduled. Ask your Residency Counselor to register you for the next one that will fit your schedule.

  5. Consider your Residency Counselor as a key source of information. Our philosophy at Sagewood is not to “sell” you on the community, but rather to inform you about our great programs and life here as a whole. The decision to become a Sagewood resident is yours alone to make. We’re confident that you will make a good, informed decision after learning the facts about Sagewood. We consider it our job to educate you about your options and choices; it’s your job to make the decision.

  6. Reserve a residence sooner than later. At Sagewood, you can reserve a residence with a deposit. This locks in the entrance fee and future long-term health care regardless of what happens from the time of deposit to when you move in. If something occurs that causes you to change your mind, Sagewood will refund your deposit withholding only a modest processing fee. This is one of the many benefits at Sagewood. Residents at other Life Care Services (LCS) communities often tell us that they wish they had made their move sooner. The benefits of living in a full-service community are many, and the way to receive the best value is to make the move now while you can enjoy all that’s available.

  7. Let us hear from you. Following your appointment, please remember that your Residency Counselor is a great source of information. If you place a deposit and reserve a residence, we will keep you fully informed with regular update meetings and communications, along with providing you with opportunities to meet your future neighbors. If for some reason you decide not to move forward, please let us know what might be keeping you from making a decision. We might be able to help. After all, this is a decision of a lifetime, and we respect that. Don’t think you need to make it alone or without all the information you need.
Give us a call and let’s get started. We’re sure we can make it a fun and educational experience.
